Job Summary

Under the direction of the nurse manager, the Registered Nurse performs a range of direct and indirect patient care activities based on standards defined by the Emergency Department. Ability to function independently in the Emergency Department is essential. Strong assessment, critical thinking, and communication skills are required, along with the ability to be a team player.

Essential Functions

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing interventions, care plans, and patient goals.
  • Provide patient care according to established standards of care, protocols, and policies.
  • Respect each patient as an individual, fostering dignity and positive self-regard.
  • Deliver patient and family education based on identified learning needs and readiness to learn.
  • Collaboratively plan and prepare patients and families for discharge, incorporating necessary support systems.
  • Delegate and supervise nursing interventions performed by others appropriately.
  • Prioritize patient care effectively, seeking assistance and reassigning personnel as necessary.
  • Document pertinent data and therapeutic interventions accurately and timely, following established standards.
  • Provide thorough reports on assigned patients to continue care integration and continuity.
  • Foster learning for colleagues and self by participating in training and professional development programs.
  • Identify and report risks to patient safety and opportunities for error reduction proactively.
  • Recognize ethical issues and develop plans to address them.
  • Safely administer medications and intravenous therapy in accordance with physician orders and protocols.
  • Assess and reassess patient pain levels, utilizing effective pain control measures.
  • Document initial assessments and implement triage protocols as required.
  • Identify potential or alleged abuse and initiate safety plans when necessary.
  • Maintain chain of evidence and complete required mandated reports as stipulated by policy.
  • Recognize laboratory and diagnostic results and communicate changes to physicians promptly.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the management of critical care situations.
  • Assist in obtaining required documentation related to medication reconciliation for use by the attending physician.
  • Implement components of required care bundles consistently and alert management of deviations.

Functional Demands

Physical Requirements: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently. Regular reaching and handling required. May require stooping, kneeling, and distinguishing colors.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum Education: Associate's Degree in Nursing required; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Minimum Work Experience: 1 year of experience in an Emergency Department preferred.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Current Registered Nurse license in Massachusetts. ACLS certification required upon hire or must obtain AHA ACLS within 60 days of hire; AHA PALS certification within six months of hire. TNCC, ENPC, and CEN preferred.
